How Domeshelters Came to Be
Driven by economic demands and industrial challenges, we often fuse past inventions with new applications to provide empowering industry solutions. The container shelter is a perfect example of this idea by merging a dome-like waterproof fabric canvas together with shipping containers. The combination of these two items provides a versatile storage shelter facility that protects workers or equipment from harsh elements.
Thanks to the Shipping Container
Container shelters would not be around today if it were not for the invention of the shipping container. In 1937, an American truck firm owner named Malcolm P. McLean was observing workers unload goods from his truck. He noticed some workers unloaded goods from his truck to transfer them to ships using slings. He realised that there should be a more efficient way to transfer goods from one vehicle to another.
McLean envisioned a system which consisted of a single container filled with goods that would be easily lifted on and off trucks and ships. After many years of developing his container system, he finally developed the first model of steel containers in 1956.
Two years later, shipping industry leaders agreed that it was necessary to standardise the size of the containers in order to enable hassle-free movement of goods all over the globe. By 1969, every shipping line in the world accepted the ISO shipping container.
The Container Shelter
Aside from its role in the shipping industry, shipping containers also serve as container shelters. This type of shelter uses steel framework and polyethylene fabric stretched over the framework. They are used to shelter heavy equipment, vehicles and workers during mining operations. Construction, aviation and agricultural companies also use container shelters to protect their assets from the elements.
Most container shelters are customisable and can have other accessories such as doorways and end walls. Typical construction of a container shelter consists of two ISO shipping containers separated by the roof space and closed off with one or two end walls. Having a container shelter in your workplace provides your company with a heavy-duty shelter system that is easy to relocate.
Container shelters are the modern solution for all temporary storage necessities. The use of container shelters is characterised by their speed of installation, portability and versatility. They are easy to mount and once fully assembled in your workplace, they become the sturdiest shelter that is cyclone-proof certified and designed based on AS1170.2.
